"Online" and "distance" sound similar, but under UGC rules they are different modes with different rules for learners abroad.
Distance (ODL)
Open and distance learning uses printed or digital study material with contact sessions. UGC limits a university's ODL courses to its territorial jurisdiction, usually its home state, and UGC has told universities not to enrol foreign nationals in ODL programmes.
Online mode
Online programmes are delivered entirely online: live and recorded classes, an LMS, and online proctored exams. UGC allows learners living inside or outside India to enrol in online programmes of entitled universities.
How to check before you pay
- Find the university on the UGC-DEB list of institutions entitled to offer online programmes for the current session.
- Check that your specific programme is on that list.
- Make sure your marksheet will say "Mode of Delivery: Online".
